Train Speed

Train Speed.

Some idea of the relative speeds of trains on leading British and American railways was given as the result of a recent visit to the United States of seven directors of the London, Midland and Scottish railways, who crossed the Atlantic to study methods adopted on the Chicago system. Sir Henry Fowler, spokesman of the party, said conditions in the two countries were different, and it was difficult to comment. He observed, however, that the Royal Scot, the crack train of his company, made the 390-mile trip between London and Edinburgh at an average speed of 56 miles per hour, against an average of 49 miles per hour accomplished by the train on the 960-mile run between Chicago and New York, page 18
