Westport Railway Picnic Club.

Westport, like many other centres, is very much on the map when it comes to holding their Annual Railway Picnic. This event took place at Lower Mokihinui, under ideal weather conditions, and turned out a glorious success. Great credit must be given to the committee—particularly our chairman, Mr. Borlace—for the way in which they carried out their duties. Everything possible was done to provide comfort and enjoyment for the picnickers in general, and the children in particular. Needless to say, we were greatly assisted by the Department allotting a free train for this event, which proves conclusively that the Board endeavours to make the road as easy as it can for its employees. Many thanks are due to the station staff for their assistance, especially to Mr. Doolan, who was at the time relieving Stationmaster-In-Charge. The train crew, porters and shunters, gave their services free. With Driver F. Junker and Fireman W. Batrup at the helm and Driver E. Kissell and Fireman J. Welshe in the rear all felt assured of reaching their destination and arriving back on time. Mr. Taylor, Workshop Foreman, made a most competent judge for the baby show, and his verdict was very popular. This event is usually the most interesting event of the day.

Mr. W. Kissell, senr., who had sole charge of the children's sports was a host in himself, and was a great favourite with the kiddies.

The Door of Opportunity.

The following letter from Mr. W. C. Aitken, formerly porter at Waiau and now promoted to the position of clerk at Christchurch Goods, has been received by the officer in charge of the Railway Training and Correspondence School:—

I take this opportunity of thanking you very much for introducing me to the Correspondence Courses, both in Christchurch and Wellington. This, I consider, has been responsible for my obtaining sufficient knowledge to qualify for Division 1.
