I wish to add to what my sister has written a few words of sincere thanks to Professor A. P. Newton, Rhodes Professor of Imperial History in the University of London, and Organiser of the Imperial Studies Committee of the Royal Empire Society, for the help he has given in the production of this little volume. It was due to his enthusiastic interest in anything bearing upon the history of the Empire that the idea first took shape of printing these letters of my grandmother's. Having been formed, this idea could never have borne fruit had it not been for his friendly and never-failing co-operation, I and my family owe him a debt which we cannot estimate.

Kilbracken.

Killegar, Killeshandra. April 9th, 1936.
