Pryde, William Middleton

Pryde, William Middleton , Farmer, “Glenburnie,” Mataura. Mr Pryde was born in Hifeshire, Scotland, page 1095 on the 27th of April, 1848, and was educated in his native land. He arrived at Port Chalmers by the ship “Grasmere,” in September, 1862, and worked at Waihola till 1866, when he removed to Mataura, where he was employed for a time as a stockman and horsebreaker. Mr Pryde afterwards bought 135 acres of land, all in tussock, and shot wild pigs on the spot where he has since grown wheat, up to fifty bushels per acre. He also leases an Education Reserve of 105 acres and raises fat lambs for freezing, milks a few cows, rears pigs, and grows grain. He was for many years chairman of the Mataura school committee; for twenty-two years chairman of the Cemetery Trust, five years chairman of directors of the Mataura Dairy Fartory, and for one year chairman of the United Temperance Council at Gore—the first in New Zealand. Mr Pryde is president of the Mataura No-License League, and a deacon of the Church of Christ, Mataura. He was married on the 18th of May, 1869, to a daughter of the late Mr David Dickie, of Kaihiku, Otago, and has a family of six sons and six daughters.
