His Worship The Mayor, Mr John Lowden

His Worship The Mayor, Mr John Lowden , after serving as a councillor of the borough of Mataura for fourteen years, was elected Mayor in 1903, and re-elected in 1904–5. He was born on the 8th of October, 1844, in County Durham, England, attended school at Sheriff Hill, Gateshead, and learned engineering at his father's ironworks at Sunderland, conducted page 1085 under the style of Lowden and Sons. In 1879, he and his brothers arrived at Port Chalmers by the ship “Taranaki,” and brought engineering machinery with them. Mr Lowden worked at Oamaru for a short time, and removed to Mataura, under engagement to erect machinery at the paper mill, now known as the Old Mill. He afterwards had charge of the plant, during the time the first printing paper was made, some of which was used for the local newspaper. In 1883, Mr Lowden commenced the engineering business, which he has since conducted and which is mentioned in another article. Mr Lowden has been twice chairman of the Mataura school committee, and acted as secretary for ten consecutive years. Since settling in Mataura he has been an office-bearer of the Presbyterian church, and has latterly held office as session clerk. Mr Lowden was married, in 1870, to a daughter of the late Mr Todd, shipowner, of Sunderland, England, and has four sons and two daughters.
