The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Otago & Southland Provincial Districts]

Otama

Otama is about equi-distant—ten miles—from Gore and Riversdale, page 1053 and is a farming district. It has a public school, under the care of a master and mistress, with an average attendance of thirty-five. The local post office is conducted at the school, and there is a telephone bureau at a private house. There is a local dairy factory at the Otama bridge, over the Mataura river. The settlement has a public hall, and also a Presbyterian church, which will accommodate 200 persons, and the Knapdale minister holds services. Otama is in the Mataura riding of the county of Southland, and in the electoral districts of Wakatipu and Mataura. The Otama creek, a tributary of the Mataura, runs through the settlement, which had a population of 138 at the census of 1901.
