early residence in Otago Mr. Wilson has shown much enthusiasm in volunteering and various other social matters. On the formation of the first volunteer corps in Dunedin his services were offered and accepted, and for twenty years he was a member of the No. 1 Company, City Guards. In 1874 he left with the rank of colour-sergeant, to become captain of the City Guard Cadet corps, which he had been instrumental in forming. After two years he was transferred to the Waikari Rifles, and retired in 1891 with the rank of first lieutenant, with an uninterrupted record
of thirty-one years of volunteer service. During his connection with the City Guards and Waikari Rifles Mr. Wilson was one of the shooting team, and held the champion belt of the latter company for two years. He has been for thirty-nine years a member of the Order of Foresters, has been secretary of Court Pride of Dunedin for thirty-two years, and is Past Chief Ranger of the United Otago district—the highest position held in that body in the colony. Mr. Wilson holds the Imperial long service medal. He has been twice married, and there is a surviving family of seven children.
