Mr. James Scanlan

Mr. James Scanlan was born in the South of Ireland, but at an early age moved with his parents to England, where he was brought up. He arrived in Melbourne in 1857 by the ship “Negotiator,” and four years later sailed for Dunedin, in the steamship “Oscar.” After a short time spent in carrying, Mr. Scanlan built the Shamrock and Thistle Hotel, in Great King Street, which he conducted for twenty years. He was one of the two first members of Court Pride of Dunedin, Ancient Order of Foresters. Mr. Scanlan has also been connected with the Volunteer Fire Brigade (disbanded in 1875), the Dunedin Jockey Club, and the Dunedin Coursing Club. He was married, in 1860, to a daughter of Mr. William Cowan, Melbourne, and has a surviving family of three sons and five daughters. Mrs Scanlan died on the 26th of March, 1904.
