Mr. Alfred William Lilly

Mr. Alfred William Lilly , Organist and Choirmaster of St. Matthew's Church, Stafford Street, Dunedin, was born in Gloucester, England, in 1868, and came to New Zealand with his parents at the age of ten. He was educated primarily in Dunedin, and received his musical training under Mr. A. J. Barth and Mr. W. E. Taylor, and for harmony under Signor Squarise. Mr. Lilly's first appointment as organist was at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Mornington, where he remained eighteen months. He was after-wards for a year organist of St. John's, Roslyn, and for three years organist and choirmaster at St. Peter's Church, Caversham. He was appointed organist of St. Matthew's in 1891, and choirmaster in 1898. The organ at St. Matthew's is a very fine three-manual instrument with twenty-five stops, built by Bevington, London. page 183 was £1400. Mr. Lilly gave his first organ recital for local charitable purposes, in June, 1895, and since that time he has been in requisition for recitals in various parts of Otago; and, on the renovation of the organ at St. Luke's church, Oamaru, he was invited to officiate at the opening ceremony. As a Freemason Mr. Lilly is a member of Lodge St. Andrew, Scottish Constitution, and is also its organist. Whilst on a visit to Sydney, in 1899, Mr. Lilly had the privilege of playing on the largest organ in the world in the Sydney Town Hall.
