Shaftesbury

Shaftesbury.

Shaftesbury, in the county of Piako, is within forty-three miles of the Thames, with which it is connected by a bi-weekly mail service. Wairongomai is four miles away, and the settlement is connected by coach with Te Aroha, eight miles distant.

Mr. William Herbert Herries, M.H.R. for the district of the Bay of Plenty, was born in London in 1859, and was educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1880. He came to Auckland by the s.s. “Tararua” in 1881, and after travelling about for twelve months, settled in the Shaftesbury district, where he has 900 acres of land. For eight years he represented Te Aroha riding in the Piako County Council, and for three years he was a member of the Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Mr. Herries was elected to the House of Representatives in 1896, and re-elected in 1899. He was married, in 1889, to a daughter of Mr. E. F. Roache, late of Shaftesbury.

Gage-Brown, William Percy, Settler, Shaftesbury. Mr. Gage-Brown is the second son of Sir Charles Gage-Brown, M.D., and was born in London, England. He studied medicine and surgery at the Edinburgh University for three years, but had to abandon his studies owing to ill-health, as he was given up by the doctors. In 1882, he came to Auckland, and became one of the original settlers in the Shaftesbury district, where he holds 540 acres of freehold, and several hundred acres of native land. Mr. Gage-Brown was married, in 1886, to a daughter of Mr E. F. Roache, one of the old settlers of Shaftesbury, and late of “Ohineroa,” and has two daughters and two sons. He was for one year a member of the Piako County Council.

Thomson, William, Farmer, “Ohineroa,” Shaftesbury. Mr. Thomson was born in 1856, and came to New Zealand in 1893. He was some time settled at the Oaks, Hawera, Taranaki, where he farmed 1000 acres. In 1898 he removed to Te Aroha district, and leased “Ohineroa,” with a right to purchase. It consists of 950 acres, and Mr. Thomson carries on mixed farming. Before coming to the colony Mr. Thomson was engaged in farming in Roxburgshire, Scotland.
