Walton

Walton.

Walton is a flag station on the Morrinsville-Rotorua branch railway, and is fifty-seven miles from Rotorua and 114 from Auckland. It stands 163 feet above the sea level, and takes its name from the Walton Estate close by.

The Walton Post Office, established in 1886, is conducted on a portion of the goods shed of the Walton railway station. There are three mails daily, and Mrs Ella Hunt has been postmistress since 1895.

The Walton Public School, which is held in one of the railway cottages near the station was established in April, 1896. There is accommodation for thirty pupils, and the average attendance is seventeen. Mr. Charles Gribble, who holds an E1 certificate, has been in charge since April, 1899.

Burnett, Frederic Walton, Sheep-farmer, Walton Estate, Walton. The estate consists of 1243 acres of freehold and 854 acres of leasehold land. The proprietor has a fine flock of Shropshire sheep, and herd of shorthorn cattle. He was born in Surrey, England, in 1858, was educated at Harrow, joined the 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers as lieutenant, and served about a year, when his health broke down. In 1879 Mr. Burnett arrived in Lyttelton by the ship “Merope,” and settled in the Waikato. He afterwards removed to Walton with a brother, who has since returned to England. For about four years Mr. Burnett served on the Waitoa Road Board. He was married, in 1895, to a daughter of the late Mr J. Hunt, of Walton, and has two sons and one daughter.

Lansdowne Estate, the property of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency page 790 Company, consists of between 3000 and 4000 acres, mostly improved land. The station carries about 3600 crossbred sheep, and nearly 400 head of shorthorn cattle.

Mr. John Teague, Manager of the Lansdowne Estate since 1888, was born in 1847, at Auckland. As a lad he entered the employment of the late Mr. J. C. Firth, with whom he continued for nearly twenty years, and had charge of the stock at Matamata station for about thirteen years.

Mr. John Hunt, Old Colonist, was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1837. He arrived in Auckland in 1860, and after considerable experience in various parts of the North Island settled at Walton in 1880. He was married, in 1868, to a daughter of the late Mr. J. Duffus, of Mongonui, and at his death, in 1893, left two daughters and one son. Eversley estate, which consists of 850 acres of improved land, is the property of his widow.
