St. John's Wesleyan Church

St. John's Wesleyan Church. This church is situated on the Ponsonby Road, and is an attractive wooden building. Its tall spire renders it conspicuous from a large portion of the city and from the harbour. The first church erected on this site was opened on the 11th of February, 1877, by the Rev. W. Kirk, then the superintendent of the circuit. On the 2nd of November, 1881, the foundation stone of the present church was laid by Mrs Dewsbury, wife of the resident minister, and the building was speedily carried forward to completion. The actual cost was £1700, and £900 was expended on the purchase of land and the adjoining parsonage. Messrs Banbury and Horsley have been assisted in the Sunday school by earnest teachers.
