Telephone 57; P.O. Box 156. Bankers, Bank of New South Wales. Private residences : Managing Director, 26 Hawker Street; Secretary, Broadway Terrace; Manager and Director. Mr. E. M. Dutton, the well-known bookseller and stationer, of Lambton Quay. The title of the firm in those days was “Dutton and Edwards,” and the business was conducted at the rear of Mr. Dutton's shop. In September of the same year Messrs. Dutton and Edwards dissolved partnership, and Mr. W. H. Green (now of Messrs. W. H. Green and Co., paper and fancy goods importers, Victoria Street) was admitted to a share in the business. For some sev[unclear: en] or eight years Messrs. Edwards and Green conducted a large and growing trade, and the firm became well known throughout the Colony as proprietors of the Industrial Gazette and Pastoral and Agricultural N[unclear: ews], and as printers and publishers of the New Zealand Law Reports and many other important works. Since the formation of the Company there has been a marked increase in the volume of business; and under the careful and undivided attention of Mr. Richards the quality of the works turned out leaves little to be desired. The offices of the Company have been fitted up in a manner and decorated in a style that the public have been pleased to approve and highly commend. Every convenience has been provided, both for customers and employees. The building is furnished throughout with the electric light, the fitting being carefully and creditably executed by Messrs. T. Ballinger and Co., Limited, of Victoria Street. The water engine in use is a double cylinder Ramsbottom—an economical and valuable medium of power. The machine-room is situated at the back of the public offices, and the composing room occupies the whole of the upper floor. The books are in the charge of Mr. W. F. A. Phillips, who also attends to customers. Mr. Edwards,

page 731 the managing director of the Company, has already been referred to in the Cyclopedia as an excouncillor of the City of Wellington, and also as a director of the Cyclopedia Company, and to these notices readers are referred for information concerning his career. Mr. C. W. Russell, the secretary, was born in Mahurangi, in the north of Auckland, and was educated there. In 1884 he came to Wellington to learn the business of a letterpress printer, and with that object entered the employment of the firm of which, ten years later, he became one of the principals. Mr. F. M. Richards, who occupies the position of manager, is a native of Wellington, and learned his trade in the district, principally with Messrs. Smith and Hogg, formerly of the Wairarapa Star. Coming to Wellington about eleven years ago, he was employed on the Exening Press for a number of years occupying the position of foreman on that paper at the time of its demise. Mr. Richards spent about twelve months in Brisbane, Quensland, where he gained valuable experience. Prior to entering the employ of Messrs. Edwards, Russell and Co. he was in Marton, Rangitikei, on the Mercury, for a short time. Mr. Richards was appointed to his present position of manager of the firm in November, 1896, during the absence of the principals in Auckland. Mr. Richards takes an interest in sport, notably in football and bicycling, and was formerly a member of the Melrose Club, and also played for the Harriers, the leading Brisbane Football Club during his residence in that city, but was compelled togive up playing on account of an accident. While taking an active interest in all matters social and athletic, he always devotes himself sedulously to business. The prospects of Messrs. Edwards, Russell and Co., Limited, are exceedingly good, and the progress of the firm should be both rapid and permanent.
