Drives

Drives.

Riding and driving are daily becoming more favourite methods of spending a few hours in the Empire City. As will be seen by reference to the paragraphs descriptive of the livery-stables of Wellington, there is a good supply of horses and vehicles of every kind, and the drives are not so limited in number as they are frequently declared to be. A visitor, with an hour or two to spare, may spend the time very enjoyably in riding or driving round Oriental Bay, past the patent slip, through Kilbirnie, and thence by the Queen's Drive to Island Bay,

page 229 returning by the more direct route of Berhampore and Newtown, as South Wellington is commonly called. Or he may visit Karori by way of Willis and Wordsworth Streets, returning by the Tinakori Road; or Johnsonville, through the Ngahauranga Gorge, returning by the Old Kaiwarra Road. If the day can be spared, these little trips may with great advantage be extended to Makara, Porirua, and Pahautanui, the Lower Hutt and Taiti, of the Wainui-o-mata waterworks. At all these places the scenery is very beautiful, greatly varied, and unlike anything that is to be seen in such close proximity to any other of the large towns of the Colony.
