[Mangaonoho]

The terminus of the Hunterville Branch of the railway line between Palmerston and Wanganui, at the time of writing (1897), Mangaonoho Settlement has a population, as ascertained by the latest census, of 166. It is twenty-three miles distant from Marton Junction, and when the line is completed to Ohingaiti or Mangaweka, will probably become a flag station. Presently there is a fair amount of business transacted at the station, which is also a post and telegraph office with a daily service of mails. Sawmilling is the leading industry, and at no distant date the mill is likely to be transplanted further afield, as the bush will have been exhausted.
