Something to Read While You're Waiting
This isn't an Extrav. Or it's not supposed to be. Straight from its success in East Berlin, Mississippi, Leopoldville, and Saigon, where the show went over with a bang, we present "GUNK", an evening of hilarious, brilliant, sensational and, we hope, profitable entertainment. This year we had designed a bigger show, with a cast of thousands, but our most brilliant deadbeats were thrown out of Varsity because they could'nt pay their fees. So, we present for your edification the nucleus of our Varsity theatrical genius in a programme designed to sustain your interest, wonder and appreciation, while attempting simultaneously to cushion the shock induced by dragging you from your warm firesides and the hypnotic blue flicker of your television screens. In short, as we are rapidly filling space with this nauseous drivel, we present an evening of television satire, weaker even than the programmes you're missing, but, we hope, somewhat more amusing, drawing heavily on the techniques of Ingmar Bergman, Franz Kafka, Sophocles, Adolf Hitler and other great comedians. Entitled "GUNK", for some unknown reason, the show will (we hope) consist of a first half comprised of something like your favourite television features, followed by a longer second half which forms a documentary on the work of the last of our dedicated scientists and politicians.
So, adopt the semi-foetal posture beloved of most television addicts, yawn, and turn your bleary eyes towards the stage. And remember, you can't turn this one off! And the doors are locked ...
