Victoria College Students' Carnival. Friday, 1st July, 1904.

"Song of the Kaleidoscope."

"Song of the Kaleidoscope."

To perpetuate a name, to preserve a queenly fame,
We some time since were "founded" —in an Act,
And tho' no doubt 'tis true, we're "kept steadily in view,"
We haven't much advanced beyond that fact.
Still we've struggled and we've fought, and defeat has mattered nought
If we've snatched a hard won Victory now and then,
If we haven't bricks and mortar, and many things we "oughter,"
There is no one will deny we have the men.

You can give no points to Froggy, tho' his knees are somewhat groggy,
You should see him lift his shoulders at the finish of a mile;
Granted that his logic's hazy, on the "line out" he's a daisy,
Ake! Ake! Kia! Toa! Come! "Good old Freddy, smile!"

We have Barristers-at-Law, to recruit the Devil's Corps;
There is Graham and there's Logan, best of pals,
And Lord Kelvin has no place when "Our Robby's" in the race.
There's "The Colt of Many Colours" shook on "gals"!!

Many "Bachelors of Hearts" will be found, too, 'mong the Arts,
You should see them in their colours—Gold and Green,
And being coached by Beere, there is nothing to come near
The vigour of our ladies' hockey team.

You can talk of "Watkin Mill(er)s," you can talk of "Alfred Hill(er)s,"
And any lady killers, that you care to bring along;
We've one who's hale and hearty, who's the soul of every party,
Waxed mo', you know, is quite so-so. Come! "Wilson, for a song"!!

Our poor Football Club was ill, for its scores were mostly nil
Till "Hunter" taught the "logic" of the game;
Tho' his "Ethics" may be rash, when he "makes his man a hash,"
He's a slashing, dashing five-eighths all the same.
To the matrimonial chair two aspirants we declare,
Who now have seen the error of their ways:
To Maclaurin "newly spliced" and Von Zedlitz "duly riced"
We wish the best of luck and best of days.

If you meet a man who's hustling, pockets filled with papers rustling
Whose feet are always bustling, as if their time was "brief,"
It's Claverhouse you're greeting, quite old stagers he's defeating
At law, at jaw, whoe'er he's for, Graham's never underneath.

Note the beery smile of Bung, when the news was world-wide flung
That the bungle of the "Bumbles" of the Law
And Appellate Court's decision, had been held up to derision—
And we're now exactly where we were before!
The Committee all looked sad, and Isitt, he went mad,
For in costs they all must drink a "bitter beer":
But the Privy Council Lords, best skedaddle from "the boards"
Or they'll hear some things—they didn't oughter hear!!

Oh! some are "land reformers" and some are "Rand Platformers,"
And some are "world informers" that they're litigants-at-law,
There's Meikle with his "mickle," Dr. Chapple with his little
Claret jar, his motor car, and his "visits" by the score!

Three well-known candidates started in the "Mayoral Stakes,"
And "Tommy" looked like winning by a length;
But the "Honourable" went steady, he's a very careful neddy,
Then the "Mayor" began to move with stolid strength.
Past the Chinamen and trams, past the women, past the prams
With his solemn sleepy smile from ear to ear,
The "top weight" forced the pace, and he won a splendid race
With the "Tommies" thundering somewhere in the rear!

For some hints on education, for an anti-Chink oration,
For the "Bulwark of the Nation" we cry, "Mother, look at Dick!"
Here's some notes on Architecture, which are gathered from his lecture,
"If money's dear, your course is clear, just build the Col. on tick!"
