Because little game was available, there was small incentive to develop fowling material. The spring fowl trap (fig. 155) must have been introduced in the first period, for similar traps were used in Samoa (73, fig. 293) for catching wild pigs and fowls and in New Zealand (23, p. 228) for catching rats.
