28-29 March 1872
We arrived at Nelson at Ten. The Bay, and Mountains with their grand Snow range, showed looked very beautiful. Here we saw enormous quantities of what is called Whale food; - a red little [gap — reason: unclear] lobster sort of shell-fish about ½ in to ¾ in long, - so numerous as to color the water as they pass along in shoals. We left again at 11, rounding Cape Farewell. It was a bright moon-light night, and as there was a band on board, composed of the Ship’s Crew, we had a delightful evening. A Mr Geisnar (a German) also played a Guitar and sang well.
