1 March 1872

On Friday, the 1^st of March ^{at 12 o’clock} I left Napier in the SS “Rangatira” for Wellington. During our progress a gale came on suddenly, and we were obliged to shelter under Castle Point. Our chain parted, and we lost our anchor, and as the steam was not ready we drifted out to sea. We started again when the gale had moderated, but only arrived at Wellington on Monday, March 4^th having occupied 3 days for a few hours’ voyage and in a small steamer crammed full of people!
