The Diary of James Brogden, August 1871 – December 1872

13 October 1871

13 October 1871

We entered Auckland on the 13th October, and were pleased with the harbour and the beauty of the surrounding hills, but as the day had nearly passed we could not see them to the greatest advantage. We found the town a busy active place, and one in which most things can be obtained. There are excellent shops and stores. At 11 at night, we crossed over the land to the other side in order to take another steamer at Manakau. We could of course see nothing, but in the morning we found this harbour beautiful, and saw in the distance the hills covered with the page 20 magnificent Kauri wood. The trees are large, and the timber some of the best in the world.
