White Wings Vol II. Founding Of The Provinces And Old-Time Shipping. Passenger Ships From 1840 To 1885

The Whirlwind

The Whirlwind.

This fine barque, of nearly 1,000 tons, one of the well-known Dundee clippers, owned by Messrs. Somes Bros., was of great length, and had splendid accommodation for passengers. On her only voyage to New Zealand she brought out 40 saloon passengers and 200 immigrants. There were three deaths and one birth. She was in command of Captain Edgell. Like the Swordfish and other vessels sailing about the same date, she experienced a tempestuous passage. She sailed from Deal on the 5th, and from the Lizard on the 11th April, 1859, and reached Auckland on July 16th.
