White Wings Vol II. Founding Of The Provinces And Old-Time Shipping. Passenger Ships From 1840 To 1885

The Slains Castle

The Slains Castle.

First of the arrivals in the year 1841 was the fine River-built ship Slains Castle, which came into port on January 25th, after a passage of 133 days, having sailed from Gravesend on September 14th, 1840. She was a vessel of 500 tons, and was commanded by Captain James Petrie. There were 224 passengers on board, including Mr. Octavius Carrington, assistant to his brother, Mr. F. A. Carrington, chief surveyor of the New Plymouth settlement. When the Slains Castle arrived representatives of the Government met the newcomers and endeavoured to induce them to go up to Auckland and settle there instead of at Wellington. This was naturally one of the incidents that did not tend to make the Wellington people feel page 26 more kindly disposed towards the supreme authority settled on the shores of the Waitemata.

An interesting story of the Slains Castle will be found on another page in Part II.
