Ulysses
Sir: It is most cheering that the New Zealand film censor has let Ulysses in. Very likely the insistence on segregated audiences was a necessary sop to conservative opinion. I had feared a little that the film might be stupidly sensational – it is often difficult for producers to translate the finest books into the film media – but it turned out to be the most positively beautiful film I have ever seen.
I am glad, too, that nearly all your correspondents who have written on the subject are grateful that this human and aesthetic experience was made possible. We are luckier than the Australians. And I am glad to belong to a country whose people are learning to use their heads and hearts sanely.
