I went to town and took a job in the ironworks. It was heavy work. The hot tongs blistered my hands until they were tough. In the boarding house where I lived there was another man called Martin. Each night we got drunk together. One Saturday the patrol car picked us both up and took us to the station. I punched one of the johns. They passed us from one to another in the cell, taking turns at punching us in the kidneys, the stomach and the balls. The next morning when the screw came to open the door, Martin hit him in the head with a broom handle. He fell down and blood came out of his eyes and mouth. We escaped but they soon caught us.
