Past and Present, and Men of the Times.

Captain John Anderson

Captain John Anderson went to sea as a boy of twelve and a half years of age, and was indentured in May, 1853, after making a voyage to St. John's, New Brunswick. After serving his apprenticeship he joined the Black Ball Line, sailing to American and Australian ports, and afterwards in various lines to India. After leaving the above lines, came to New Zealand as a passenger, shortly after arrival, joining the pilot service at the Port of Wellington, in which he remained for several years. He then joined the steamer "Wellington," under Captain Carey, and three months afterwards was appointed chief officer of the s.s. "Taranaki," at that time taken over by the Union Steamship Co. In this service he has remained for the last twenty years, commanding various steamers. Captain Anderson is well known for his kindly and generous disposition, and is one of the most popular commanders in the Union Company's Service.
