What They Saw
Nothing, then one another, then a coast;
a woman with punctuated lips and chin.
Was she the ocean, or the world
they would as lief be waking in?
Well, they would wait for what the anchorage became:
a settlement; a town; some sort of brain.
A Catechism
for John
What do you see?
I see a great wind inside the stone.
Are you alone?
Yes, I am alone.
What do you hear?
Always I hear the wind, then sense the weight of love.
Then, my dear one, what are you thinking of?
A leaf, a rose, the sad king's tree.
What do you touch?
Lately a wing, but it has burned away.
And what is that I see beyond the ancient hill?
Another priest escaping.
Another priest escaping?
Of course. Another priest escaping from the apple.
