You just know enough to stay close enough to hear it, or to watch closely enough from some distance to read their lips; you know just enough to know you must write it down. You don't know anything else. B flat? C minor?—Yeah man (as they would say). Whatever.—You, you don't know anything. You watch and listen and conceal your panic, at all the things you don't know. You watch, and you listen, and you write it down.
