Sport 7: Winter 1991

these are the eyes that watched him walk away

these are the eyes that watched him walk away

When I rang after that Mr Stephenson'd answer the phone, if anyone answered at all, and he'd always say, 'Lemmy's not here,' and I'd say, 'Oh that's all right, I'll call back later.' And sometimes I did but the phone just rang. I'd listen to those phone beeps and as each one sounded I thought it was like watching lorries speeding along on a long lone road going somewhere and you were stuck in one particular place, like one of those dumps we saw up North, and you knew in your heart of hearts, you were never going anywhere ever again.

So I stayed in my room and listened again and again to Dusty's 'Colouring Book' which seemed to soothe some part of me while I worked away desperately getting nearer and nearer to School Cert and Mum'd bang on my bedroom door and say What's going on in there and I'd yell back so angrily I wanted to cry, Nothing, Can't I have some privacy, Is that too much to ask,

This is the room I sleep in
and walk in and weep in and
hide in, nobody,
nobody sees,
oh call it lonely please

And the phone never rang.
