Maori family (ancestors of the Reiri family) outside a whare puni (small communal sleeping house) at Mangaakuta, a hamlet near Masterton. The legend of Maui fishing up the North Island is depicted on the gables of the building which is sometimes referred to as the `Maui House'. Photograph taken by James Bragge circa 1870s. This house has also been described as being at Manga-a-Kuta Pa, Homebush, Masterton, Clancy's Corner, and as "Maori Pah Pipitea Point 1865".
