FIELD TRANSPORTATION

FIELD TRANSPORTATION

Air transport was again provided mainly by twin-turbine UHI-N helicopters, with C130 flights to and from the Crary Ice Rise.

One snowtric toboggan was used by Plume and Keys and ran without a fault for the 80 km required.

A power wagon enabled Barrett and Powell, accompanied by Stanton, to make a day visit from Scott Base to the New Harbour area, saving some 90 minutes of helo time.

A dog team was used at the Crary Ice Rise. Once they settled down, they were pulling about 600 lb, 12 km in 3 to 5 hours. The lack of a trained lead-dog was an obvious disadvantage that not even someone with Steven's doghandling ability could overcome. However, they were a significant help. Further details of the performance of the dogs will be found in a report to Antarctic Division by Stevens.
