Hockey

Hockey.

After their poor exhibition against Hutt in the last match, the Seniors appeared to find form again on Saturday, when they defeated Karori II. by a comfortable margin, 3-0. Rain fell continuously throughout the game and during the second half in particular the ground cut up to such an extent that short passing tacties were definitely out of the question. In spike of the unfavourable conditions, however, the team managed to combine very effectively, although there is still room for improvement in positional play.

During the first half, Varsity were handicapped by the fact that they were playing against a strong wind and for the greater part with only ten men. Eggleton was unlucky to miss with a hard drive from the edge of the circle, but made no mistake a few minutes later when he opened the score. To Foster must be given much of the credit for the second goal. After taking the ball almost the length of the field, and with only the full-back to beat, he passed to Shaw, who completed the movment. Robinson increased the lead to three. Innes, who was playing well at right wing, made good ground on several occasions, to centre unerringly. The defence was very sound, with Newcombe playing his usual safe game in the half-back line.

Training College retained the lead in the Junior competition, their game against Wesley on Saturday being called off half-way through the second spell, with the score 9-1 in their favour. They are still closely followed, only one point behind, by the Varsity Junior team, who defeated Huia, 5-1.
