Basketball

Basketball.

Saturday last spelt victory for both the Varsity teams and rigorous was the rejoicing thereof.

Previous to the Varsity match, we watched a great match between the two probable champions of the Wellington Senior A teams—Wellington East and Kia Ora A. The game was fast and furious and every girl in both teams was playing on top of form. IIna Small proved to be the light of the Wellington East forwards, potting some marvellous far-away goals. The Kia Toa goal third gave a great dispaly in the face of their tough opposition. The last few minutes saw the game 20-all, then 21-all, ten a win to Kia Ora, 22-21. It remains to be seen what is the result of the second rounde. East are the holders of the Championship trophy at the moment.

Varsity A played a good, but not over-strenuous, game with Technical College, the bright part of the latter's team being their forward third, where the goals gave an exhibition of accurate passing and sure shooting. In the goal third of Varsity some brilliant field work was done by J. Grainger who was up against a very tough partner. However, Janet has now regained her ancient prowess at goal-shooting. Marjory Gibbons is the best shooter, but does not get many opportunites, because she does not jump enough, nor come in front of her partner. The Varsity centre combined quite well, the defenders played individually well, but their combination was "not so good." The second pass in the defence third is still too slow.

The Varsity Senior B had a good win over Kia Ora, who fielded a steady team. The score of 25 to Varsity, 16 to Kia Ora, speaks well for the V.U.C. team, especialy as their best goalie, Eve Irwin, was in absentia. The big hand to the B Captain for being the only V.U.C. girls included in the reps.—Onward Muriel!

We were disappointed that more V.U.C. girls were not chosen as reps. Probably swat and Training Colleg TGourney has interfered with practice. But we wish Erice Overton had lhad a better spin. The selectors only saw her play once. This girl should go far.
