New Speakers' Debate

New Speakers' Debate.

The above debate was held on Wednesday last in the Gym., the subject being that "In the Present Situation a Dictatorship is preferable to Democracy." Messrs McGlynn and Hatherly were billed to speak for the affirmative, Miss Dickens and Mr. Duncan for the negative. Mr. McGlynn, the White Hope of the dictators, took the floor first. However, he had hardly go into his stride before his pains came upon him, and he was forced to sit down—amid the cheers of the opposition. This was a great disappointment to "Smad," as a special reporter had been sent to cover this brilliant young Irishman's speech. Mr. Hatherly took his place, and overwhelmed the audience with a flow of facts and figures. From this he wandered into a discussion of French temperament, ably opposed by Miss Dickens. The proceedings dragged along until Mr. Malcolm Mason took the floor, and gave a short but very bright talk on the personal habits of Messrs. Mussolini and Hitler.

But how I run on! The ultimate winner, Mr. McCulloch, was discovered on the floor of the house, with Miss Dickens, second.
