Chapping Hoods — Hints To Housewives

Chapping Hoods

Hints To Housewives

The Capping Ceremony is now at hand and if indications prove true, many graduands will be searching in vain for hoods-particularly those of Bachelor degrees.

It may well repay graduands to have their hoods made privately and it is a light duty for a dress maker or a friend to do this. The materials required are 1£ yards of 38 in. cotton poplin for the outside, the same amount of satin of the appropriate colour for the lining, and two yards of fur for edging the hood. Artificial silk may be used for the lining instead of satin, but in this case, a double lining will probably be required to prevent the blackness of the outside showing through. The fur is bought in wide lengths and will require to be cut and on the number of strips so obtained will depend the length you buy.

With the aid of a pattern, it is then a simple matter to cut and sew the hood which may well be made for £1, and if the expenses of sewing are avoided, or cheaper material used, for considerably less.

If readers experience any difficulty, the Editor pro. tem. (Tel. 41-010) will be pleased to give what assistance he can.
