SMAD. An Organ of Student Opinion. 1936. Volume 7. Number 1.

First Steps

First Steps

At the end of your first week, many of you will be revising your ideas on this process of higher education. Those whose search is mainly for culture may be disappointed while those who consider a University as a factory for a mass production of graduates may be strengthened in that belief. Though no railing of ours will change this cheap outlook on education, we can at least plead with you, one and all, to enter as fully as you can into the various activities now open to you, beyond the confines of your examination syllabus.

Whether you are teacher, lawyer, or budding scientist, throw yourselves into all phases of 'Varsity life with that enthusiasm which is supposed to be the distinctive mark of the first-term fresher. There is at your disposal a wide selection of clubs and societies, many of which during recent years have not received the support they deserve. Whether you attend meetings only as an interested spectator, or patronise social functions as a Smad reporter, or join a sporting club with no idea of winning a University blue, your mere presence will gladden the hearts of the oft-disappointed committee members.

For those of a literary turn of mind there is our excellent library, where, for the first two terms, you will have a unique opportunity for peaceful meditation.

Finally, for seekers of journalistic fame there is always Smad, in which your pearls of wit and wisdom may be preserved in a permanent form for your admiring fellow-students.
