Freshers Welcomed

Freshers Welcomed

Saturday night saw the College Gymnasium pocked with old students and freshers and freshettes, all there with the intention of starting he social year well. As usual with such functions, the executive's organisation was defective. The sing-song which is supposed to familiarise newcomers with college songs and spirit, got away to a bad start. Mason's merry men round the piano, did their best but were let down badly by the operators of the lantern, most songs being concluded before appropriate words were shown. John Carrad, our inimitable crooner, warbled in his sweet fashion through his catchiest numbers, successfully dispelling the atmosphere occasioned by Martin Liddle's mournful boss.

Proceedings were interrupted at this stage by the appearance of Mr. Bradshaw, who, pacing up and down the platform in a manner reminiscent of a caged lion, officially welcomed the freshers and proceeded to give the usual warning re extremes of swot or sport, advocating a full participation in College activtles, in accordance with established tradition.

Finally at 9.30, everybody adjourned to the dance hall which, within ten minutes, reminded one of Woolworths on a Christmas Eve.

Two or three ambles round the floor, a good supper, and it was 12 o'clock, when as an example to freshers who might be tempted to desecrate the Sabbath, the brief function was immediately brought to a conclusion.
