SMAD. An Organ of Student Opinion. 1935. Volume 6. Number 6.

[Canterbury team]

From Canterbury College is reported fierce activity in preparation for Tournament. The Stud. Ass. has decreed a levy of 1/- per head to assist the ream to reach Dunedin and numerous other projects for raising funds are being exploited.

There is a note of optimism in the College with regard to possibilities at Tournament. In athletics, as usual, C.U.C. will be very hard to beat. There is a plentitude of good runners, and the field events, it seems likely, will be better contested than was expected earlier. Recently, College records were established by Anderson 157½ for the 440 hurdles) and Boot (2mins. for the 880), Hounsell broke the N.Z.U. record for the javelin throw with 172ft. 7ins. Carmichael and Oldfield are a very strong pair for the 220 and 440 respectively. Boot, who is really good, is a strong hope for the half-mile and mile, and may possibly take both of these titles. As far as present knowledge goes, it looks as if C.U.C. will retain the Athletic Shield this year.

Their swimming team is rather moderate and from all accounts the other colleges are weak in this department. Two new records were established in their trials, but on the whole the outlook is not bright.

The [unclear: ving] eight is training hard but [unclear: it is] difficult to assess their chances. It is certain, though that the eight which beats them will know that they have been in a race.

Coming now to tennis. The standard is lower than it has been for some time, and it would not be surprising to see C.U.C. lose their supremacy in this field. With Barrer, [unclear: Baru] and Young not competing this year, the men's section is badly weakened, and also the mixed doubles.

There [unclear: does not seem] much likelihood of [unclear: Auckland's] monopoly of the basket ball shield or cup or rose-bowl or whatever it is being threatened by C.U.C.

A feature of this year's C.U.C. boxing lead is its hard punching. [unclear: Mr. Narr, Barns Gaudin] and Hudson ([unclear: why with williams] will make up the [unclear: lear] are all k.o.specialists Despite this ominous trait, however, the team is not of outstanding merit.
