The Spike or Victoria University College Review 1931

The Maze

The Maze

I wander in wonder
Wondering wander
Through the dark corridors
Glass-murky miradors
Men like ghosts walking
—Babelisp talking—
Grope through the haze
Of this sempiterne maze
Each in his long lonely
Corridor, only
Ghosts for his fellow-men
Chanting a drab amen
To his hoarse sorrow. . . .
To-day and to-morrow
And ever and ever
I wander and never
Comes streak of the light
Or an end to this night.
Stark horrors possess me
No lovers caress me
As lonely, unfriended,
Light innocence ended,
All graces forgotten,
All tears dank and rotten
As worm-ridden rain,
All grieving in rain,
I wander stone-blind
Through the maze of the mind.

Antonietta McGrath.
