The Spike or Victoria University College Review September 1927

Midwinter I

Midwinter I.

Smoke from the bonfire lingers
Above the sloping grass
Before the west wind singing
In the sunlight comes to pass.

She sings a song of meadows
In darkest winter green,
Of blue and crinkled hilltops
That she this day hath seen.

She dances with the shadows
Of the sombre gorse and broom,
And laughs with springtime laughter
In the forest's deepest gloom.

Thus singing passes onwards
Till her song with beauty fills
In the blue that binds the valleys
Of the distant, wandering hills.
