The Spike: or, Victoria University College Review, June 1919

V.U.C. Re-union

V.U.C. Re-union

At the beginning of 1916 the idea was first mooted of holding after the termination of the war a reunion of past and present students. Few of us then realised that the war would last until 1919, and accordingly a comprehensive scheme for a three-day reunion, to be held at Easter, 1918, was prepared. It was even fondly hoped that our men would all be back in New Zealand by that date. Alas! the Huns, in their typically reprehensible way, declined to collapse according to our time-table. However, the committee appointed to organise the reunion proceeded to send abroad the majority of its male members to investigate personally (with full power to act) the reason for the delay: the success of their investigation, and of their power to act is now apparent, and there is no reason to anticipate any further interference will the smooth course of the reunion. If there is, well, next time we shall send Mr. Brooke to look into the matter.

The Reunion Committee is meeting shortly to make definite arrangements, which will be published fully in the next issue of "The Spike." In the meantime, it can be taken as practically certain that the reunion will be held at Capping Time next year. In the ordinary course Easter would be the best time, but next year the fact of the University Tournament being held here at that time prevents a reunion being held simultaneously. The reunion will probably extend over several days, and will, it is hoped, include sports gatherings of several kinds—a ball, and an extravaganza reminiscent of olden times at Salamanca.

The 21st anniversary of the College, if slightly belated, can also be fittingly celebrated at the same time. It is hoped that every old student, wherever he or she may be, will make an effort to attend the reunion, and that every present student will strive to assist in making the reunion one of the landmarks in the history of the College.
