Men's Club

Men's Club

It is with pleasure that we report the re-appearance of the green and gold on the hockey fields of Karori. Since the 1916 season, when 'Varsity managed to maintain one team in the competition, the green has been conspicuous by its absence. Needless to say, the sport as a whole has suffered considerably during the interval. This year, however, prospects seemed brighter, and an effort was made to revive the old Hockey Club. The task was no easy one. The exploits of the old V.U.C. Hockey Club had become but a memory, and few of the old members were available to assist in the task of re-instating the Club. The results have not been spectacular, but the Club has managed to enter in the second grade a team which, with more experience, should give a good account of itself against its rivals. The greatest difficulty experienced was in the matter of practice. A number of members journeyed to Karori on several Saturday afternoons prior to the commencement of the competition and managed to get in some useful work, and latterly some enthusiasts have been spending a hour at the game on Kelburn Park in the early hours of the morning.

To date two matches have been played. Our first match, played on May 17th, against Wellington, resulted in the defeat of 'Varsity by 8 goals to 2. Wellington's team included several players of considerable experi page 51 ence, and, all things considered, 'Varsity made a creditable showing on this, the ocasion of their re-appearance.

The second match, played on May 24th, against Karori, resulted in a victory for 'Varsity by the substantial margin of 12 goals to nil. We must confess that the result was not altogether an indication of our own strength, and it is only fair to Karori to state that their team was considerably weakened through the removal of several players into the senior teams. Their team was completed by the inclusion of several rather youthful players, who are to be congratulated on the good fight they put up.

Our prospects for a successful season seem very bright. Perhaps by the time the next issue goes to print we will be able to report a big step forward towards the place formerly occupied by 'Varsity in Wellington hockey circles. Already sufficient players are offering to warrant the entering of a second team, and we are confident that when the Club gets right back into the swing of operations it will soon justify its re-appearance.
