Vacation Studies

A series of discussions were arranged for the long vacation on "Students and our Social Future in New Zealand." The aim was (a) to discover the facts of the present social situation; (b) to discover, as far as possible, specific remedies; and (c) to discover what students could do towards solving the problems. The studies were prepared as follows:
(1)"On Present Social Conditions"—Miss M. England, Canon Chatterton, Rev. Fletcher, and Sister May.
(2)"The Industrial Machine"—Mr. B. E. Murphy, M.A.
(3)"Suggestions towards a Progressive Political Programme"—Professor T. A. Hunter.
(4)"Education and the Democracy"—Mr. W. H. Foster, M.A.
(5)"The Churches and Progress"—Rev. J. K. Archer.
(6)A final address on the Christian position.

These arrangements were upset by the Epidemic, but eventually the Union was able to proceed with the first four discussions.
