Glee Club

Phyllis: What gentle music greets my ear A down the zephyr winging?
Corydon: Those notes seraphic, sweet and clear, Must he the Glee Club singing.

—"Blab" Ballads.

Female academic writing on musical score

It is regrettable that such a fine institution as the College Glee Club should not be more highly patronised than has been the case this year. Right from the start our ranks were only partly filled, and with the prospect of many members resigning in the second term under the usual excuse of "swot," the outlook was not promising. To add to our misfortune, it appeared that some of the members who had joined thought they were nobly supporting the Club if they attended a casual practice. How can a Club that depends for its success on the combined efforts of its members hope to flourish as long as this spirit exists? Is it fair on the "enthusiasts" that they should have their efforts spoilt by the well-meaning clang of the "casuals"?

In spite of the adverse state of affairs in the earlier part of the year, thing soon brightened up. Capping came upon us, and the members rallied in time to get up a glee for the concert. The annual concert and dance of the Club was scheduled for the 19th of September, but it was not till within a few weeks of this event that real enthusiasm was shown. Larger practices were held. The "casuals" were a thing of the past. The concert and dance were all that could be desired, thanks to the efforts of a noble few.

Before this year's work comes to an end the Club will endeavour to hold its annual concerts to the Missions to Seamen and to the Porirua Mental Hospital.
