The Spike or Victoria College Review, June 1905

[introduction]

"Thou dost speak masterly,
My life upon it, young though thou art."

Twelfth Night.

THE debates that have so far been held, give promise of a very successful year. Some of the younger members have spoken on various occasions and though, as yet, there has been no appearance of an orator to take the place of those who have lately gone from us, several have created the impression, that with practice, they will develop into sound, if not eloquent speakers. Perhaps from the nature of the subjects chosen, tendency to substitute assertion for argument has been rather noticeable.

It is to be regretted that none of the ladies have as yet, felt moved to speak, though it cannot be admitted that they are not now so fluent as in former years.

A debating tournament, controlled by the Executive of the "Union Parliament," has been inaugurated. The Victoria College Society has been entered and hopes are entertained that its representatives will be well up.

It may be mentioned here for the information of students in general, and of the Society's representatives in particular, that the "Union Parliament" meets on alternate Tuesdays at 8 o'clock in the Y.M.C.A. rooms, The next meeting will be on July 4th. It has been thought that some of our members must have mistaken the time or place of meeting.

The Society is to be congratulated on now having funds to provide a prize for the most consistent debater. The amount for this year will be about £2 10s. and it is hoped that the prize, which will be awarded on points allotted to the five best speakers at each ordinary meeting, will stimulate a keener competition to catch the Chairman's eye.
