Translation.
This Deed1859. 11 August.Hawke's Bay. written on this eleventh 11th day of August in the Year of Our Lord 1859
is a full and final sale conveyance and surrender by us the Chiefs and People of
Heretaunga whose names are hereunto subscribed. And Witnesseth that on behalf of
ourselves our
Ruahine. (Claims of Hapuku and
others.) relatives and descendants we have by signing this Deed under the shining
sun of this day parted with and for ever transferred unto Victoria the Queen of
England Her Heirs the Kings and Queens who may succeed Her and Her and their
Assigns for ever in

consideration of the sum of three thousand, three hundred and forty
pounds £3,340 to us paid by Mr. McLean on behalf of the Queen Victoria (and we
hereby acknowledge the recepit of the said monies) all that piece of our Land
situated at the Ruataniwha, at Mangahouhou, at Kakarikihutia, at the Waipuha,
which are the names of the said pieces of land, the boundaries whereof are set
forth at the foot of this Deed, with its trees minerals waters rivers lakes
streams and all appertaining to the said Land or beneath the surface of the said
Land and all our right title claim and interest whatsoever therein. To Hold to
Queen Victoria Her Heirs and Assigns as a lasting possession absolutely for ever
and ever. And in testimony of our consent to all the conditions of this Deed we
have hereunto subscribed our names and marks. And in testimony of the consent of
the Queen of England on her part to all the conditions of this Deed, the name
of
Boundaries. Mr. McLean Commissioner is hereunto subscribed. These are the boundaries
of the Land, commencing at the mouth of the Mangamauku stream and running up the
said stream to Taneateko, thence to Tohua Pakihiwi thence to te Ranga, thence to
te Parakautu where it strikes the Puharakeke, whence it runs on to
Tapuaeokaroro, thence to te Arohata a Taiki, thence to te Mangakino, thence to
Takanga o te Waipikiao, thence to Turioruaki, thence to Waipipipi, thence to te
Arawahi, thence to te Turiotikura thence to
Maro-page 537tieke, thence to te Rahui,
thence to Maruera, thence to Manuka, thence to Korako, thence to Marotonga,
thence to te Waro o te Manawakawa, thence to Taumatataua. thence to te Umukuri,
and down that stream to its mouth and into Waipawa, and down Waipawa to the
boundary of the land sold to the Queen at Totaratutahi where it turns and runs
to Taumatataonga, thence to Taumata o Waikoia where it strikes the Mangaonuku
and follows that stream to the mouth of the Mangamauku. One piece of land
is
Native reserves. [500 acres.] to be returned by the Queen to us, at Tikokino, five hundred (500)
acres, two hundred acres of which are to be secured to Ropata te Waiariki, three
hundred acres for the people living there. To be surveyed and pointed out to us
by Mr. Cooper.

forty pounds £3340 being the full consideration money expressed in the
above-written Deed to be paid by Mr. McLean on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen
to us.
