Maori Deeds of Land Purchases in the North Island of New Zealand: Volume Two



This land selling document written on this twenty ninth (29) day of June in the year1857. 29 June. 1857 is a paper of the true assent of us the Chiefs and people of Ngatikahungunu whoseManga-A-Rangipeke. names are hereto affixed to fully and entirely transfer a piece of our land to Victoria the Queen of England and to all the Kings and Queens her successors for ever. And for our consenting to give up this piece of our land Victoria the Queen of England on her part agrees to pay for our said piece of land the sum of five hundred pounds (£500)Receipt for £500. which amount we have this day received from Mr. Cooper.
The boundary begins at Te Umutaro and runs to the Pou-a-Ouenuku thence to TeBoundaries Tuawhiti thence to Te Whare-o-Taraia where it enters the wood of Taumahapu and runs through the bush and emerges at te Whataupoko thence to Upoko-o-Paua thence to Mangamate and runs up the Mangamate to Mangataiorea thence to Taumatao Matakite whence it runs into Mangaonuku thence down the Mangaonuku to Parikarangaranga on to Te Manga o Rangipeke thence to the Whakarapurapu thence to the Umutaro where it ends.

Now we have fully reflected upon wept over bid adieu to and finally transferred this land inherited by us from our ancestors with its rivers streams waters woods plains trees stones grass and everything above or below the soil, with everything else appertaining to the said land we have fully and entirely surrendered in the face of open day as a sure possession to Victoria the Queen of England and to all the Kings and Queens her successors for ever. In witness of our assent to all the conditions of this Deed we have hereunto affixed our names and marks.

And in witness of the assent of the Queen of England on her part to all the conditions of this Deed it has been signed by Mr. Cooper one of the Land Commissioners for the Governor of New Zealand.
