Translation.
This deed1857. 15 April.Hawke's Bay. of Sale of Land written on this day the fifteenth (15) of April in the
year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty seven (1857) is a Deed of
the full and unreserved consent of us the Chiefs and People of Ngatikahungunu
whoseOtaranga. Names are hereunto subscribed on behalf of Ourselves of our Relatives
and of all our Descendants hereafter to be born entirely and for ever to
transfer a certain portion of our Land to Victoria the Queen of England and to
Her successors Kings and Queens for ever and ever.
Receipt for £1,000. And in consideration of our full and unreserved Sale of this Land
Victoria also the Queen of England agrees of Her part to pay us the sum of. One
thousand Pounds once told which monies we have this day received from George
Cooper Esquire.
Boundaries. The boundary of the Land commences at the mouth of the Oaro stream
thence along the said stream and on to Rautapapa thence on to Omawhai thence on
to Poporenga thence along the Poporenga and on to te Upoko-o-Koko thence on to
Waitangi thence on to Tuwharemamika thence on to the mouth of the Kauhangapiro
stream thence along the Kauhangapiro and on to Otamaararo thence on to te
Puotepikitanga thence turning it runs on to Reureuowhiuwhin thence on to te
Otaratahi thence on to te Otuaroa thence on to te Anaroa thence on to Pohatuhaha
thence turning Easterly right along the ridge of the Ruahine on to Ohawai thence
on to Oruurea thence on to Tama-hine-o-te-urunga-tapu thence on to Wairangi
thence on to te Rakautaonga thence on to Tikorangi thence turning and on to Wai
tutaki thence right on to the Ngaruroro thence right on along the said stream
and on to Poauau and so on until it joins at the mouth of the Oaro stream. There
it ends.
Now we have fully considered and wept over and bidden farewell to and entirely
given up these Lands of our Ancestors which have descended to us with their
streams their lakes their waters their forests their rocks their mountain ranges
their plains their goodly places and their barren spots and all and everything
above or beneath the soil and all and everything appertaining to this Land given
fully and unreservedly under the shining sun of this present day as a sure
possession for Victoria the Queen of England and for Her successors Kings and
Queens for ever and ever.
Now in witness of our consent to all the conditions of this Deed we have
hereunto subscribed our Names and Marks.
And in witness of the consent of the Queen of England of Her part to all the
conditions of this Deed is hereunto subscribed the Name of George Cooper Esquire
one of the Land Commissioners of the Governor of New Zealand.
