Maori Deeds of Land Purchases in the North Island of New Zealand: Volume One

Translation

Translation.

Know all men by these presents that in pursuance of the Native Reserves Act 1858. 30 August.Auckland District. 1856 We the undersigned Aboriginal inhabitants of the Colony of New Zealand do hereby give and convey unto Her Majesty Queen Victoria Her Heirs and the Kings and Queens who may succeed her those two pieces of land situated at Orakei the boundaries Orakei. whereof are set forth at the foot of this Deed and a plan of which land is annexed Church of England endowment. thereto upon trust to grant the said land unto the Bishop of the Church of England in New Zealand and to the Bishops who may succeed him to be held by him for a site for a Church for a Burial ground and for the endowment of a school connected with the Church of England.
1st Piece. Commencing at a stake at the North East corner of the same 270 links Boundaries. distant from the North East corner of the Native Chapel in the direction of a line bearing 356° 30’ by compass proceeding thence in a Westerly direction 264 30’ by compass 500 links to a stake thence in a Southerly direction 173° 15’ by compass 699 links to a stake thence in an Easterly direction 94° 0’ by compass 258 links to a stake thence in a North Easterly direction 33° 30’ by compass 330 links to a stake thence in a Northerly direction 356° 30’ by compass 490 links passing the East end of the Native Chapel to the stake first mentioned.

2nd Piece. Commencing at a stake at the North West corner of the same 136 links distant from the North East corner of the Native Chapel in the direction of a line bearing 43° 0’ by compass proceeding thence in an Easterly direction [unclear: 35]° 30’ by compass 200 links to a stake thence in a Southerly direction 176° 30’ by compass 500 links to a stake thence in a Westerly direction 266° 30’ by compass 200 links to a stake thence in a Northerly direction 356° 30’ by compass 500 links to the stake first mentioned.
