Parangu No. 2 Block, Coromandel District.

This Deed made the seventh day of December One thousand eight hundred and 1870. 7 December.Coromandel District. seventy Between the within named Kapanga Te Arakuri and Makoare of the one part and Her Majesty Queen Victoria of the other part Witnesseth that in consideration of One hundred pounds paid by Her Majesty The Queen Victoria to the said Kapanga Parangu No. II. Te Arakuri and Makoare (the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged) the said Receipt for £100. Kapanga Te Arakuri and Makoare Do and each of the Doth hereby convey assure release and surrender unto Her Majesty Queen Victoria. All that piece or parcel of land known by the name of Parangu No. 2 and particularly mentioned and described in the within written Deed of Grant Together with all the rights and appurtenances thereto belonging To hold the same unto Her Majesty Queen Victoria Her Heirs and Assigns for ever In Witness whereof the said parties have hereunto subscribed their names the day and year aforesaid.

I, James Mackay the Younger of Auckland in the Province of Auckland New Zealand Declaration I of James Mackay, jun. a duly authorized Interpreter under "The Native Lands Act 1865" "The Native Lands Act 1867" and "The Native Lands Act 1869" Do solemnly and sincerely declare—
  • 1. That I was present together with Daniel Tookey of Shortland in the said Province, Miner, and did see Makoare mentioned and described in the within written Deed duly sign and execute the same.
  • 2. That immediately before the execution of the said Deed by the said Makoare I did interpret the said Deed to him into the Maori language and that my translation thereof was correct and was understood by the said Makoare.

And I make this solemn Declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true and by virtue of certain Acts of the General Assembly of New Zealand intituled the Native Lands Act 1865—The Native Lands Act 1867, and The Native Lands Act 1869, and The Justices of the Peace Act 1866.

I, James Mackay Junior of Auckland in the Province of Auckland New Zealand a duly authorized Interpreter under The Native Lands Act 1865 The Native Lands Declaration 2 of James Mackay, jun. Act 1867 and the Native Lands Act 1869 Do solemnly and sincerely declare—
  • 1. That I was present together with Frederick Horton Crippen of Auckland aforesaid clerk on the seventh day of December instant and did see Kapanga Te Arakuri mentioned and described in the within written Deed of Grant and also in the Deed of Conveyance endorsed hereon duly sign and execute the said endorsed Deed of Conveyance.
  • 2. That immediately before the execution of the said deed by the said Kapanga Te Arakuri I did interpret the said deed to him into the Maori language and that my translation thereof was correct and was understood by the said Kapanga Te Arakuri.

Crown Grant to Katanga te Arakuri and Makoare, Coromandel.

1866. 13 January.Coromandel District.Victoria, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Queen:
Parangu No. II. To all to whom these Presents shall come, Greeting:
Know Ye that for good considerations Us thereunto moving We for us our Heirs and Successors do hereby grant unto Kapanga Te Arakuri and Makoare of Kapanga in the Province of Auckland aboriginal Natives their Heirs and Assigns, all that Parcel of Land in our Province of Auckland, in our Colony of New Zealand, containing by admeasurement One (1) Rood and Eight (8) perches more or less situate at Kapanga Boundaries. [0a. 1r. 8p.] in the District of Coromandel and known by the name of Parangu No. 2, bounded towards the North West by the Kapanga Road one hundred and eighty two (182) links and fifteen (15) links towards the North East by a line leading to Maori Houses one hundred and fifty (150) links towards the South East by a line two hundred and five (205) links towards the south by a line sixty eight (68) links and fifteen (15) links and towards the West by the Kapanga Creek and numbered one hundred and three N (103n).

As the same is delineated on the plan drawn in the margin hereof, with all the Rights and Appurtenances thereto belonging: To Hold unto the said Kapanga Te Arakuri and Makoare and their heirs But subject nevertheless to and upon this express condition that the said Kapanga Te Arakuri and Makoare or either of them or the heirs of either of them do not convey assign transfer or set over their or his or any of their estate or interest in the said land or any part thereof or by any deed or instrument in writing affect to convey assign transfer or set over their or any of their Estate or Interest in the said land or in any part thereof to any other person or persons or body corporate or politic than Her Majesty the Queen her heirs and successors. In Testimony Whereof we have caused this our Grant to be sealed with the Seal of our Colony of New Zealand.

Witness our Trusty and Well-beloved Sir George Grey, K.C.B., Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over the Colony of New Zealand, at Wellington, this Thirteenth day of January, in the Twenty ninth year of our Reign, and in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and sixty six.
